Strike on Wednesday, October 14

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the CNV and FNV trade unions are organizing a nationwide strike in regional public transport. The strike also affects U-OV buses and trams. As a result, fewer buses and trams will run. We will only know exactly how many on the day itself. NS trains and the buses, trams, and metro services operated by GVB (Amsterdam) and HTM (The Hague). At RET (Rotterdam), only the metros and trams are running, but the buses are not.

What does this mean for your journey?

The Wijkbus Nieuwegein, local buses, and U-flex will operate as usual. For the other buses and trams, this depends on how many drivers and tram operators come to work that day. This may change during the day. Trips may therefore be canceled or run late. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Below you can read which services will run in each area. The map shows which area falls within Utrecht Inner and which falls within Utrecht Outer.

Our advice

Can you travel another way on October 14? If so, please do. Are you traveling by public transport anyway? Check the journey planner in the U-OV app or on our website shortly before departure. We will update the travel information throughout the day.

Utrecht Binnen

Update 14 October - 9.00: The bus and tram drivers who are working today drive the busiest and most important routes as much as possible. This way, you know in advance which routes do not run and which routes mostly do. These buses and trams may run less often than usual. This can change during the day, because it depends on how many drivers come to work. You can find up-to-date travel information in the U-OV app or in other travel apps. Please note: the information screens at the stops do not always show the correct times.

We will try to operate these routes:
Tram 21: IJsselstein – Utrecht CS – Science Park
Route 1: Utrecht Hoograven – Utrecht CS – Overvecht
Route 3: Utrecht CS – Overvecht
Route 8: Utrecht Lunetten – CS – Wilhelminapark

Utrecht Buiten

In Utrecht Buiten, we will operate the regular timetable as much as possible. The extent to which this succeeds depends on the number of drivers taking part in the strike. We will only know which ones on the day itself. Please allow for delays and canceled trips. We will do our best to remove all canceled trips from the journey planner as quickly as possible. Therefore, check the journey planner shortly before departure to see whether your bus is running.

Why is there a strike?

Employers and trade unions have been discussing a new collective labor agreement for public transport for some time. They have not yet reached an agreement. The employers want to continue talks. The trade unions have decided to strike.

Will there be more strikes?

The trade unions intend to strike more often in the coming period. We do not yet know when and where this will happen. If the trade unions announce a new strike that also affects our buses and trams, you will read about it on our website and in the U-OV app.

Employers want to continue talks about a new collective labor agreement02F

Our employees have good employment conditions. That must certainly remain the case. We also want a good collective labor agreement for public transport. However, the demands currently being made by the trade unions involve costs for which there is insufficient financial room in the sector.02F02F

The financial pressure on public transport is significant. Its consequences for our sector, now and in the future, could be substantial. We need to discuss this now. Together, we want to make agreements on a modern collective labor agreement that is good for employees of all ages and ensures that we can continue to organize public transport effectively in the future. This will keep public transport available and affordable.

We do not think it is reasonable that the unions are immediately resorting to the most extreme measure. Strikes do not solve the financial problems in public transport; they make them worse. Moreover, passengers and clients are affected by a conflict in which they are not parties. We consider that irresponsible. Our message to the unions is therefore clear: stop applying pressure outside the negotiating table and return to the talks so that we can find a solution together.02F
