Strike on Wednesday, October 14

On Wednesday 14 October 2026, the trade unions CNV and FNV are organising a nationwide strike in regional public transport. The strike also affects U-OV buses and trams. As a result, fewer buses and trams will run. We will only know the exact number on the day itself. NS trains and the buses, trams and metros of GVB (Amsterdam), HTM (The Hague) and RET (Rotterdam) will run according to the normal timetable.

What does this mean for your journey?

The Wijkbus Nieuwegein, local buses and U-flex will run as usual. For the other buses and trams, it depends on how many drivers and tram operators come to work that day. This may change during the day. Trips may therefore be cancelled or delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Below you can read which services are running in each area. The map shows which area belongs to Utrecht city centre and which to Utrecht Countryside.

Our advice

Can you travel another way on October 14? If so, please do. If you do travel by public transport, check the journey planner in the U-OV app or on our website just before departure. We will update the travel information throughout the day.

Utrecht City Centre

We will try to operate the busiest and most important lines. These lines will probably run less frequently than usual. We will only know on the day itself whether they will actually run. This depends on the number of drivers and tram operators who come to work.

We will try to operate these lines:
Tram 21: IJsselstein – Utrecht CS – Science Park FF
Line 1: Utrecht Hoograven – Utrecht CS – Overvecht FF
Line 3:FF Utrecht CS – Overvecht FF
Line 8: Utrecht Lunetten – CS – Wilhelminapark FF
Line 28:FFVleuten – Utrecht CS – Science Park FF
Line 29: Vleuten – Vaartsche Rijn – Science Park – Bilthoven FF
Line 66: Utrecht CS – Nieuwegein Het Klooster FF
Line 73: Maarssenbroek – Utrecht CS – Zeist FF
Line 74: Vianen – Nieuwegein – Utrecht CS – Zeist FF
Line 77: Nieuwegein – Utrecht CS – Bilthoven FF
Line 84: Vianen – Utrecht CS FF
Line 122: Nieuw-Loosdrecht – Utrecht Overvecht FF
Line 158: Bilthoven – Berg en Bosch FF

These lines will definitely not run:
Tram 20 and Tram 22.

Utrecht Countryside

In Utrecht Outer, we will operate the usual timetable as much as possible. The extent to which this is possible depends on the number of drivers taking part in the strike. We will only know which drivers these are on the day itself. Please therefore expect delays and cancelled trips. We will do our best to remove all cancelled trips from the journey planner as quickly as possible. Check the journey planner shortly before departure to see whether your bus is running.

Why a strike?

Employers and trade unions have been discussing a new collective labor agreement for public transport for some time. They have not yet reached an agreement. The employers want to continue talking. The trade unions have decided to strike.

Will there be more strikes?

The trade unions intend to strike more often in the coming period. We do not yet know when and where this will happen. If the trade unions confirm a new strike that also affects our buses and trams, you will read about it on our website and in the U-OV app.

Employers want to continue talks about a new collective labor agreement

Our employees have good employment conditions. That must certainly remain the case. We also want a good collective labor agreement for public transport. However, the demands currently made by the trade unions involve costs for which there is insufficient financial room in the sector.

The financial pressure on public transport is substantial. The consequences for our sector, now and in the future, could be significant. We need to discuss this now. Together, we want to make agreements on a modern collective labor agreement that is good for employees of all ages and ensures that we can continue to organize public transport effectively in the future. This will help keep public transport available and affordable.

We do not think it is justifiable that the unions are immediately resorting to the most drastic measure. Strikes do not solve the financial problems in public transport; they make them worse. Moreover, passengers and clients are affected by a conflict in which they are not parties. We consider this irresponsible. Our message to the unions is therefore clear: stop applying pressure outside the negotiating table and return so that we can work together toward a solution.
